Getting There Isn’t Enough

Simply getting to the gym is not enough.  I don’t think you should feel like you’ve done the hard part by getting yourself to the gym.  The part you should focus on is keeping the right mindset.  This mindset will vary.  For some, it may be a more aggressive thing – they need to get to the gym and dominate their workout.  For others, it may be based around efficiency.  Maybe they don’t have an hour to be in the gym, so they have to remain focused in terms of exercise order, sets, reps and rest time.

A few days ago, I was standing by the lockers in my gym when I overheard two gentlemen talking.  One of them said to the other, “Hey, you’ve gotten here. That’s the hard part.”  Now that seems like some pretty common encouragement in a gym setting.  But for me, I like to analyze these things a bit.

Now the guy who had been told this did not look like the most motivated character.  I had seen him quite a few times at the gym and he never really seemed excited. Not that it’s expected you walk around with a massive smile on your face, but you know what I mean.

Although the kind ‘words of encouragement’ had good intentions, I feel like they may have adverse effects, and in fact, lead to poorer performance in the gym.  Think about it – it’s like someone saying to you, “You’ve made it to the Olympic finals.  That’s the hard part! The rest isn’t as bad.” Of course we’re speaking on a much, much….MUCH lower scale here, but it’s the same idea.

The rest will be hard.  In fact, it will likely be harder.  Yes, on a mental level, getting to the gym can be difficult for some and physically bringing yourself there says something about your character and your intentions.  But to say that the rest will be easier; I don’t think is wise.  It’s a setup for the wrong mindset, and taking this route will lead to a sub par experience in the gym.  What results from sub par experiences? Sub par results. And you don’t want sub par results do you?

Get excited about being in the gym.  Be focused and have a goal.  Record your progress. Don’t settle for ‘just getting to the gym’ because getting there isn’t enough.

And on that note, I’m off to the gym.
